Jspecs and USDM motors aren't too different: they're still 20 year old, used motors. If you're going through the effort to replace a motor, might as well go the extra step and tear it down to clean it up and refresh it. Otherwise you're just taking a huge gamble throwing in a used engine with a questionable history. It blows my mind that people will just buy a used motor and toss it in, then complain when something goes wrong with it.
